I'm My Mother's Daughter: My Love of 60s Music

I grew up listening to the oldies. My mom would always have the oldies radio station on in the car, or she would blast it on Sunday mornings while making my brother and I breakfast. As I got older, I started to learn about the importance of The Beatles in my mother's life, as well as other bands who had a huge influence on her childhood. When I was 20, she dragged me off to see The Guess Who. They were playing at a fest in our town. I didn't really know who they were, and when I asked my mom, she said, "You know, they sing 'No sugar tonight in my coffee, no sugar tonight in my tea!'". I rolled my eyes, and told her I would go with her. Little did I know when I started listening to The Guess Who play at the fest, how many of their songs I actually knew. I started to sing along with my mom to all of their hits. Mom was so proud. She was happy she had a daughter who knew the lyrics to such songs as "Laughing" and "These Eyes." He...

Rebellion and First Kisses: My Life as a Kindergartner

It's funny when childhood memories sprout up out of nowhere. Really funny. I attended a networking event for creative professionals last night, and a gentleman I was speaking to was comparing something to Kindergarten and mentioned when the teacher leaves a classroom of kindergartners for five seconds, the whole class goes haywire.  Suddenly, a thought popped in my mind that was a memory from my own Kindergarten days. Which also leads to the story of my first kiss. My Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Berman, was gone for the day, so we of course, tortured our substitute teacher. Or, more like I did. From what I can recall of this day, I decided to tie-up the boy I had a crush on, Thomas, to the teacher's chair, and ordered all the girls in class to stand in line so we could take turns kissing him. The classroom was in such disarray, that the sub actually called our teacher to come in on her day off. I'm sure she was thrilled. Once we heard our teacher...

My First Celebrity Crush is Now My Inspiration: Mike Nesmith of The Monkees

When I was five-years-old, I became obsessed with the band “The Monkees.” My fandom started when my mother went to work on a Saturday and my uncle was babysitting me and my one-year-old brother. My mother was going through her divorce from my father, and to make ends meet, she worked on the weekends as a hospital receptionist.  That weekend, there was a “Monkees Marathon” on MTV, and I was glued to the television the entire time. From that point on, I was hooked. Friend’s in my 1 st grade class would ask me “Who’s your favorite band?” and I would say, proudly and with enthusiasm, ”The Monkees!” Mind you, this was 1986, when Michael Jackson and Madonna were all the rage. A lot of my classmates didn’t have cable TV, and didn’t know what MTV was. I would come home from school and watch reruns of “The Monkees” on MTV almost every day. My cousins on my dad’s side, who I would see every other weekend at my grandma’s house, caught on to my “Monkees Madness”, and we would wa...

Welcome to My World

As a child, I always knew that when I grew up, I wanted to write. I went to school for journalism, with the all intent purpose to become a hard-hitting investigative journalist. While pursuing my bachelor's degree, I realized journalism was not my cup of tea. I didn't want to be told what to write about, I have my own stories to tell. So, this is why I have this blog--to write about events, people, and thoughts that have changed me, or that I have learned lessons from. Random musings about my life, and in some cases, random thoughts written that lead to the question-Are you kidding me?
